REU stands for Research Experiences for Undergraduates, and it’s a key item for your resume/CV, whether you want to go to grad school or work in industry! As part of your REU, you will partake in research at another university in the US or Puerto Rico in a 10-week summer program. REUs span the science disciplines and can be quite focused or interdisciplinary. They are funded through the National Science Foundation (NSF).

REU recipients typically are provided:

  • Free housing (and sometimes meals)
  • A stipend of $4500-$9000 for the 10 weeks
  • Sometimes: travel assistance to get you there
  • Sometimes: funds to attend a meeting or conference of a professional organization and present your research
